THE ECOMUSEUM OF GUADELOUPE
GOING TO THE ECOMUSEUM
The Ecomuseum is located on the heights of Sainte Rose, on the road to Sofaïa. The place is very easy to find.
Coming from Deshaies, the road is on the right just before entering the town of Sainte. Rose. There is a sign at the entrance of the road. After a few minutes the museum grounds are apparent on your left.
Unlike the Grivelière, the Ecomuseum is not implemented in a restored facility. The location has its own history, quite rich and linked to slavery. On this place a kind of magician, Jocelyn ROUMBO, has been working since 1989 with his wife to achieve a place devoted to traditions, customs, life in Guadeloupe.
It was initially the "Jardin Creole", a
place of knowledge and teaching, gathering all flora and the Pharmacopoeia which enabled to live in isolation. He was awarded
the label "Remarkable Garden".
But Jocelyn wanted to go further and achieve a remarkable Ecomuseum that you will foresee here ...
The estate is opened every day from 9
am except on Mondays. After the entrance we are welcomed with a tasting of cocoa before enjoying a visit at our convenience thanks to very well designed explanatory panels.
"Et La vie est belle!" (and life is beautiful) as Jocelyn always says!
The tour starts with what was originally the Creole garden, an apparent disorder where in fact everything is in its place.
Plants characteristic of the daily life, for food of course but also for care, wash, preserve. Some known and others overlooked or even ignored, all are there with explanatory boards, recipes, anecdotes occasionally...
Then we discover an alley housing 32 showcases, each dedicated to a town of Guadeloupe showing their peculiarities.
A visit of the archipelago to retrieve
or discover places
sometimes ignored by visitors.
Then comes the Guadeloupe of yesteryear
“an tan lontan”, with first the traditional tools and a travel through history since the Native American to the present day, illustrated
through various size compartments with items and characters: ethnic groups of Guadeloupe, evolution, new settlements. Staging and narrative panels clearly show the course of Guadeloupe.
Finally, the existence of the older
generations with reconstructions of simple and natural lifestyles, before
ending with the classic image of the typical “lolo” with domino players.
Impossible to describe everything here, only one solution: to see, enjoy and learn!
To give you a (small) idea, a few slideshows showing the various spaces... !

WANDERING IN THE CREOLE GARDEN
THE SHOWCASES, ONE FOR EACH TOWN IN GUADELOUPE
HISTORY, INHABITANTS AND TRADITIONS
The tour is fascinating, but the Ecomuseum also proposes a restaurant area. Based on a "Table d'hôte" style it allows you to enjoy traditional dishes of Guadeloupe, as roucoyades of fish with delicious gratins of vegetables from the garden ... To taste leisurely in this rustic setting.
Two cottages are open for rental amidst the vegetation. If you intend to stay for a while towards Sainte Rose, this is the place!
