DESHAIES BOTANICAL GARDEN
South of the town of Deshaies (where the BBC serie "Death in
Paradise" is shot) is a remarkable botanical garden.
It is located at "Morne aux Fous" (Fool's hill), so named after the seabirds "Fous Masqués" (Sula dactylatra). The 7-hectare estate first belonged to Guy Blandin, who introduced some rare plant species.
In 1979 it was bought by the french humorist Coluche who made it his residence in Guadeloupe, installed a house facing the sea. This house no longer exists, but a very large one has been built on the same location, available for renting.
In 1991 the property was acquired by Michel Gaillard who then decided to make it a botanical garden, opened since 2001.
The tour is a nice walk to discover the flora and tropical plants, including orchids, palms, cacti and some bird species.
Everything is very well arranged, well presented and the ride is as pleasant as playful.
The access is very easy: coming from the South, pass Pointe Noire, then the town of Géry, the road goes up
continuing towards the hills. The park is indicated on the right before reaching the bay of Deshaies.
From the north, from Sainte Rose, you have to cross the village of Deshaies, go up to the hills and the park is well signposted on the left at the top of the road.
At the entrance, a large oriental-style pond with water lilies and many koi carp.

Trees and cactae
The garden allows to discover many trees, sometimes weird, especially palm trees and, near the exit, a space dedicated to cacti.
In many places, you just have to look up to find beautiful orchids.
Aviary, loriquet and macaws
Towards the beginning of the visit, a beautiful aviary welcomes us. A lock allows you to enter and find yourself in the midst of multicolored loriquets. It is possible to observe them fly, to give
them seeds ...
Further, a sort of "village of parrots", with several small cabins sheltering magnificent macaws.
Waterfall and park house
Towards the middle of the park, a beautiful artificial waterfall creates a beautiful scenery. At its peak, a restaurant and, next flamingos ... not very pink.
Towards the end of the visit overlooking the large house that can be rented.
